Today started like any other day for us. I had to work in the afternoon so I had the morning to “nest” and go for my daily walk. This particular day was very hot and humid! We were having a major heat wave this week which led to sausage-like fingers when braving the elements. I walked about a mile, something I did almost everyday during my pregnancy. It felt really good to keep moving the bigger I got. I went to work around 2pm and I was looking forward to seeing my clients as the days drew near until you were to arrive. Little did we know that we would see you very soon.
I had your Daddy come in for a haircut this evening which is so bizarre because I usually gave him a haircut at home. Around 9pm I was done with work and starving… We went to our favorite restaurant, Chipotle! We sat at dinner and talked about the excitement that both of us were feeling when we talked about seeing you for the first time. Our due date was rapidly approaching (August 2nd).
When we got home Daddy got on the computer to work and I got into my comfy clothes to assume my position on the couch for the evening. As I was watching the Real World Challenge, twenty minutes after arriving home, I felt a strange pop in my belly. Followed by a sensation of wetting myself. Which is what I thought I had done since it is common for pregnant women to do at this stage. I ran to the bathroom only to realize that my water had broke indeed. I glanced at myself in the mirror with a half smile of joy and a half smile of fear. When I told Daddy what I thought might have happened, he turned from his computer with this look I will never forget. Almost the same look he had when I showed him the positive pregnancy test! We were both so happy and a little scared too. THIS WAS HAPPENING!
We went for a walk and packed the rest of our bags. Our doctor happened to be on call this particular night and we had discussed previously that I wanted to stay at home as long as I could. She told me to rest through the night and call her in the morning. Daddy and Mommy went to bed around eleven on July 20th, knowing that we would get to meet you tomorrow, hopefully! I couldn’t sleep for multiple reasons, as your Dad laid next to me peacefully sleeping. I got up and was escorted by Finn (our loveable golden) to the living room where we watched a movie. I needed something to keep my mind off the contractions so I played “The Hangover”, one of Mommy’s guilty pleasures. During every contraction I was able to get on all fours and just sway through the pain. Finn was supportive in a way that I didn’t even realize was possible. He knew something was happening and he stayed by my side all night.
We headed to the hospital at 8:30am on Thursday, July 21st. We checked in and Mommy was already dilated to a 6, YEA! A lot of breathing and bouncing on the birthing ball, in almost complete silence, I felt like I was making extreme progress. By noon I was fully dilated and ready to begin pushing. I pushed for 5 solid hours. We tried every position we could, left side, right side, pull ups, all fours… You just were too comfortable and didn’t want to come out. Because I had been trying for so long they decided they needed to assist me with the forceps. Mommy had an incredible doctor who within minutes said “Natalie, look down….” As I opened my eyes to look down my emotions took over as I was seeing for the very first time the most precious miracle in the world. At 5:19 on July 21st, Mommy and Daddy received a gift from God, You!!!
